Where are you Mr. President? Where have you been these past eight years? People are struggling, people are hurting, and people are dying - Where are you?
You have less than two months left in office. You have no more campaigns to win, no more funds to raise, and no more donors to swoon; why won’t you help us now? Why do you refuse to help the people who launched your political career and catapulted you to the highest office in the land? The people of Flint need you Mr. Obama. The people of Standing Rock need you. The PEOPLE NEED YOU!
I remember when you got elected, oh how high the hopes were. The people hoped, but you changed. At the time, I told my liberal friends, “The only thing that will change is the fact that we now have a black president”. To their chagrin, I was right. As soon as you won, I knew you were a charlatan. You stacked your cabinet and office with Wall Street hacks, lobbyists, and industry insiders - the very power brokers we wanted a change from. Then Occupy Wall Street happened. You sat silent while your own people, the very people who elected you were beaten, brutalized, and pepper sprayed in the name of corporate power. Where were you then? Oh that’s right, you were on Martha’s Vineyard dining with the very people who wrecked the economy, that’s where you were.
You received a Nobel piece prize for absolutely nothing. You have disgraced this medal and you should give it back. Your administration has overthrown more countries than the war criminals Bush and Cheney, who you pardoned by the way, yet you have a peace prize?! How do you sleep at night? How do you sleep at night when the people of Flint still don’t have clean drinking water? Beyond not caring for them, you actually held a press conference in which you take the smallest sip of the tainted water and proclaim, “It’s clean!” I wonder why Trump won Michigan. Shame on you Obama! You have betrayed us, what is wrong with you?
Right now there are people being brutalized in North Dakota. These people are fighting for their basic rights enshrined in the constitution - the right to their property, the right of free assembly, and the right to free speech. Why don’t you stop the brutalization of the Natives and protesters at Standing Rock? People are being blasted with sound cannons, concussion grenades, and sprayed with water hoses in subzero weather. Private mercenaries attack protesters with guard dogs, and shoot them with rubber slugs and poisonous gasses that are outlawed by the Geneva Convention. Weapons of war are being used against our countrymen on our own soil. These people are fighting for their basic right to be secure in their property, to be secure on their land. Why have you done nothing?
You claim you care about the environment, and you talk a good game on global warming, but that’s all you do is talk. The verdict is in on the tar sands oil and it is by far the dirtiest form of petroleum that we burn. Why are you silent? You are a constitutional law professor and scholar, how can you justify a no fly zone on American soil in an attempt to silence the press? The brave people at Standing Rock are fighting for our future. They stand on the front line of the war against the climate and the planet. They stand in rebellion against the corporate state and the profit driven madness that is killing us all.
I call on you President Obama right here – if you stand with the people and the planet, then you will stand with the protesters in North Dakota. President Obama, I am calling on you to issue an executive order, effective immediately, halting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline and ending the brutalization of the protesters who are there. I am calling on you to immediately fly to North Dakota and stand on the front lines of this war against humanity in solidarity with the people. This is your chance to redeem yourself. You can go down in history as someone who stood for what was right, or you can go down as someone who sold us out. The choice is yours; please make the right choice!
Sincerely, an American Reformer
